Under the Mistletoe- Part 1

Part 1
Saturday, November 20th, 2010 –  Buena Vista, CO
“How’s the wedding planning going?”
“Umm, I don’t know if you could say it’s been “going” really, I have been so busy with the photography business that I sometimes forget that I am engaged.” said Rosalie to her mother. She sighed and took another sip of her coffee, glad to be in the comfort of her family’s kitchen. Life had been crazy the past month but financially very good.
Rosalie smiled at the thought of how many photo shoots she had booked over the coming holiday months. At the age of 25, her dream to be a successful photographer and owning her own business had finally came true.
“Honey, maybe you should push back the date of the wedding then. June is not that far off and there is no reason to hurry into a….”
Rosalie snapped quickly out of her daydreaming and cut her mother off, “Mom, I don’t want to hear this again.  I love Micah and he’s a great guy and a lawyer! I still don’t understand why you act like you don’t like him sometimes.”
“Rosalie, he’s a fine man I just think you are at a point in your life where there is no reason to hurry into marriage.” Rosalie’s mother sighed. There was only man, Rosalie's mother contemplated, that would ever be the perfect match for her daughter.
“Mom, I am not having this discussion. It’s almost ten and we have an appointment at Amy’s dress shop to look at bridesmaids dresses.” Rosalie was quick to change the subject. Today was one of the few days that she had entirely off and she desperately needed to make some progress on wedding plans. The more Rosalie thought about it, though, the more she didn’t want to deal with it. When Micah and Rosalie were first engaged about six months ago, Rosalie had been giddy with the excitement of her upcoming nuptials but that excitement had waned fast.  She had continually told herself it was only pre-wedding jitters, it had to be.

A little after ten, Rosalie and her mother arrived at the quaint dress shop in the heart of Buena Vista, her hometown. Rosalie had always been thankful that she had grown up in Colorado. Although she went to college out of state, she had always known she would come home for good. The mountains surrounding her took her breath away every day.
Greeting her as soon as she entered the shop were her three best friends and future bridesmaids, Madeline, Katie, and Emma.
“Well it’s about time you showed up!” Madeline said jokingly.
“Haha I know! Now, don’t give me any trouble! Isn’t the Maid of Honor supposed to always be compliant and nice?”
“Oh, yes queen Rosalie!”
Madeline and Rosalie always loved to give each other a hard time. Growing up together and later even attending college together, they had been through thick and thin by each other’s side. Upon becoming engaged, Rosalie didn’t have to think twice about who would be her maid of honor.
“Enough, enough, let’s do some shopping. I have a wedding party to dress!” Laughing, Rosalie and the rest of the group started the search for the perfect bridesmaid dresses, digging in to the massive throngs of tool, satin, and every other kind of material imaginable.

“I loved that red halter dress! It looked so good on!” Exclaimed Katie, as she took another sip of her margarita.
“It did, but I don’t know, the dresses just didn’t click for me. We will make a trip to Denver after the Holiday’s and make a day of shopping. “Rosalie mused. They had spent three hours in Amy’s dress shop sorting through her numerous styles but Rosalie was unsure of all of them. Her frustration and her friends growling stomachs had made her postpone the bridesmaid dress shopping until a later date.
“Rosalie, you have yet to find your wedding dress!” Emma stated, showing sincere concern in her dear friends sudden very picky nature.
“I know, I have been looking guys, but none of them seemed right.”
“Maybe your mother is right, maybe you don’t want to get married yet.”
Rosalie contemplated Madeline’s comment, and then decided against it. “No, that’s not it. How about let’s forget about this wedding business for the moment and enjoy this beautiful Colorado day, at the best Mexican restaurant in town with the strongest margaritas.”
They all laughed at Rosalie’s comment then stopped when they noticed two men in uniform walking in through the door and up to the bar, their backs to the women.
“Either I have had too much tequila or those are some fine looking Marines.” Madeline stared in their direction and Katie and Emma hummed in approval.
Rosalie suddenly felt different, a little unsettled. Something about the taller, darker Marine felt all too familiar.
“I think I have had way too much to drink already, I’m such a lush.” Rosalie picked up her glass of water, taking a sip and watching as the one Marine began to talk intently, almost in a friendly knowing way with Jose, the owner of the restaurant. Rosalie continued to watch as Jose and the Marine began laughing like old friends and then, without warning, Jose pointed in Rosalie’s direction and the Marine turned his head in her direction, locking her gaze.
“No fucking way.” As Rosalie made that comment, her friends also gasped in awareness.
